Join us the evening of May 23rd 6:00-8:00pm for a workshop on affordable housing in Durham, hosted by the Protect Durham Housing Campaign and the Durham branch of the NC Piedmont Democratic Socialists of America.
We will hear from Mel Norton, Board Member at Durham Community Land Trust, who will be discussing the state of housing and gentrification in our community—who will speak about the history of housing inequality in the context of our current housing crisis.
Following, Dave Wickstrom, Executive Director of the Alliance of Disability Advocates (adanc.org), will speak to how housing issues impact the disability community.
This workshop will be a jumping off point to organizing around housing accessibility in Durham. After we hear from our speakers, there will be a small group discussion, as well a breakout session for action groups to make plans to continue to engage with this issue.
About the Protect Durham Housing Campaign
This exciting new campaign is fundraising to hire a full-time housing organizer at the Durham Community Land Trust (DCLT). As home prices in many Durham neighborhoods have increased by over 500% in the last ten years, the Land Trust has played a critical role in buying and managing homes to keep rents affordable for community residents. The DCLT housing organizer will build critical relationships, organize our residents, and advocate for housing policy changes in collaboration with local organizations. DCLT is partnering with the local chapter of Resource Generation - a national organization that organizes young people with class privilege to redistribute land, wealth, and power - to help launch this campaign.
